The Fog
I do get, like i can see why this might be a high scorer for some, some of the shots are visually definitely a treat, the views of the ocean, and the spirits in the fog look dope, especially standing around in the church, real dope AF screenshot there. And the soundscape, the Classic, beautiful john carpenter sound we all know and love, its there, and its nice.
But man over all its just a slog to me. i try to love it, but at best i can say i dont hate it, and its sometimes pretty to look at, but not enough to save it for me.
It is very much weak sauce. If i'm not mistaken, i think i recall Carpenter mentioned this film was made intentionally lacking in the harsh violence that was common of slashers and the like of the day, intentionally bloodless to focus much more on the gothic folklore aesthetic and classic horror feel, to focus more on the chills without being outshined by bloody spectacle.
Which is admirable in its own right, i love a good gory flick, and i also respect a truly great film narrative that doesnt primary focus on that too, such things can be great films, favorites even.
But despite this hitting some very nice visual and audio ques,
I'm sorry, but this movie was made of all the ingredients in such a way as it was missing one that would have made this awesome.
Great, brutal kills. It feels incomplete for that reason. it does not feel complete enough to be lacking such a thing, it really feels like it should be a vehicle for extreme blood, but is missing it.
It does pick up the tension somewhat successfully towards the very end, but its also very much a slog throughout the first 3 quarters of the movie.
Also as much as i love Jamie Lee, she legit feels entirely uselessly tacked on, shoe horned into this movie, probably because of her scream queen peak fame of the time, i suspect?
Is a bit odd but shes good enough, even as a useless extra, to not bring it down any, and kinda adds flavor to our primary, mostly dry male hero. Which probably would have bored our tits off if jamie wasnt giving him something to bounce character off of. So in a way she was uselessly......useful?.
Jamie can enter the shoes of a dumb character that does nothing and still improve the film.
Anyway. Definitely one of Carpenters weakest entries, this is my second viewing.......... i dont think ill return again.
Not so bad i wouldnt watch with someone else if they wanted to, but not great enough id ever feel an itch to ever watch it again.
