show replaces the books' emphasis on reason, logic, and the power of large-scale forces with more stupid mouthbreathing sci-fi pew pew lasers in space drama, character-driven conflicts (tv series ) vs masses in the Maelstrom of thousands of years of history (in the books), and religious/cult-like elements, stripping the source material of its intellectual depth.
What's bad writing is that when you have a big mystery, after the reveal, viewers should look back at the clues and go, "Ah, now it makes sense!" rather than "WTF?" Also what's bad writing is when you have a whole bunch of filler in your episodes and you have precious few interesting characters, that you kill off one of those characters without earning those moments rather than "why the fuck did you get rid of the reason to keep watching" .
