This is definitely a film that, to get the best out of it, you have to leave your brain in your coat pocket and simply let it wash over you. Unfortunately, the moment you give it even the slightest scrutiny, the whole thing begins to fall apart. It is painfully predictable, laughably formulaic and, worst of all, completely unsure of what it wants to be.
One moment, it is a fairly amusing teen comedy; the next, it is trying to become a serious high school drama before abruptly switching back to comedy without ever quite making the transition work. The tonal shifts are clumsy, the characters feel thinly written, and the plot is so obvious that there is never any real sense of surprise or tension. Even the central transformation feels more like a collection of familiar clichés than a convincing character journey.
There are moments of charm, and the cast occasionally manages to make the material watchable, but the film never settles into a consistent identity. It wants to be funny, romantic, dramatic and feel-good all at once, yet it rarely commits fully to any of those qualities. As a result, it ends up feeling less like a satisfying coming-of-age story and more like a predictable collection of teen-movie conventions. It is a shame, because there is the foundation of an entertaining film here, but it never develops into anything particularly memorable.
Mini Review: This is definitely a film that, to get the best out of it, you have to just leave your brain in your coat pocket and let it wash over you. The problem is, it doesn't stand up to any kind of scrutiny at all. It's painfully predictable, laughably formulaic and, worse than that, it doesn't even know what it wants to be. One moment, it's fairly amusing, the next, it tries to be like a teen drama, and the next, it tries to be funny again, but doesn't quite pull it off. It's a shame.
