Goodfellas
it's just amazing how it remains fresh. of course this will always be scorsese's show, and maybe his most popular ever, but the film wouldn't be this powerful without schoonmaker's precise editing, unleashing and withholding its energy, and liotta's performance, so brilliantly mundane and shockingly real that we can't help but think that we are somewhat close to him, one his goodfellas listening to his story, about to go out there and see some action. still think pesci gets whacked too early. mafia workers trying hard to get all the money they can and have all the fun in the world before the same vicious system -- yeah, late capitalism -- that enabled them to do whatever the fuck they wanted eventually puts them down. the fear of boredom, of being a nobody is like a drug. it's either accumulation of everything or nothing, zero.
