Les Carabiniers
Some scenes here are just peak 60s Godard: young soldier going absolutely berserk in his first time at the movies, literally trying to 'enter' the screen to touch a girl having a bath; main duo coming home from war, showing their wives not treasures they were promised by the king, but actually postcards and pictures of these same 'things', everything from airplanes and fast cars to department stores and even beautiful famous women. Quite angry antiwar film that is constantly questioning the very notion of war films. So it engages in a pretty unique depiction of violence and brutality, both crude and surreal, somewhat witty and raucous, following these two young carabiniers becoming less humans and seeking a 'way out of the system' and to escape poverty after being granted permission to kill, pillage and rape, as the rich and powerful remain faceless, covered by multiple chains of command, making deals and deciding who lives, who dies, who eats, who gets rich, who gets poorer. Disturbingly timeless.
