Frankenstein
guillermo del toro's newest effort frankenstein had me really excited, but going into it i was almost immediatley disappointed.
i would rate this a 3/5, but then people would say, "oh, so you still somewhat liked it?", and that would not be true. i thought the colour grading was frankly ugly and did not fit the gothic tone that frankenstein had been given over the years, and i understand this is meant to be a retelling and i respect guillermo's decision, but i just plain don't like it. it's so vibrant yet still feels so dull, corporate and netflix-y, which i guess can't really be helped as this is a netflix original.
i also felt the cinematography was trying too hard to be artsy and unique and came off not unlike the colour grading, dull & corporate.
however, i can't deny the great performances by oscar isaac, jacob elordi, mia goth & christoph waltz's original character, as they all fit the dramatic tone the movie was going for & were just generally great to watch.
i also felt they somehow messed up the story, one of the most acclaimed classics of all time written by the great mary shelley, and turned it very boring, and once again, dull & corporate. one thing i am grateful for is that the two-and-a-half-hour runtime, to me at least, only felt like an hour and a half, but i felt even that was a slog to get through.
overall, i am really disappointed in the new frankenstein retelling but am appreciative of the creative risks guillermo del toro took to make it fit his vision.

I feel like this is the version of FRANKENSTEIN that Branagh wanted to make: a splashy, bold and at times genuinely moving version of this tale, that brings a laser focus to the...
