The Witch

what the witch manages to do in only what seems like a quick 90 minutes is beyond me. explores powerful family dynamics, everyone suspicious of each other, each not knowing they are at their own fault, all driven by the haunting 1600's time period and haunting woods landscape. the score is brilliantly uncanny too, immediately setting the tone and putting the fear in your heart to make this an enjoyable and creepy experience. there is also a lot to unpack here metaphorically, regarding the ambiguous ending and the symbolisms of black phillip and the rabbit. i am especially captivated by the character of katherine, the mother, and how her suspicion eventually drove her mad so that not even her booming husband could contain her inevitable breakdown, especially after black phillip's massacre and she herself resembles what she despises so greatly, a witch. overall, a great and spooky watch, 87/100.
