As you’d expect from a movie that bills itself as being from the directors of Puss In Boots 2, the animation and style are among the high points. It lives up to that movie in that regard. In fact, it might even be a little more stylized than that one. And it all looks great and adds to the feel of it. There’s a lot of stuff going on in this movie, and the animation reflects that with all the tricks it throws at the screen.

The story itself plays out like an animated version of The Hangover, that’s kid-friendly, but not above pushing the PG rating. I’m pretty sure adults are the ones who will appreciate the coming-of-age story more. And that coming of age story is very well done, adding some heart to the core of such a stimulating movie.

But the fantasy elements, which is what the kids are going to latch onto anyway, are also just as good. It creates a rich fantasy world for these characters to have their adventures in.

The story is a little complex, but not in a confusing way, in a way where all the details add to the experience. And the story is never less than interesting and charming. Unfortunately it falls pretty short of that aforementioned Puss in Boots sequel because the humor isn’t as good. A lot of jokes can come across as juvenile or annoying. Because of this some of the comic relief characters kinda alternate between charming and… not-so-much.] And ending is pretty cheesy. Both for things that happen, and for how overly sentimental it can be at times.

But other that that, this is definitely a worthy successor to Puss In Boots: The Last Wish. A fun, stylized movie that despite all the constant stimulation still wears its heart firmly on its sleeve.
