On top of being unmistakably a dad movie, it’s also unmistakably a movie for dog lovers. Make no mistake: the dog is the real star here. And he’s kinda the best character in this movie. Not that there are a whole lot of other characters here, since most of the movie is just Pitt and the dog alone in the woods. But he’s still the heart of the film. And, like last year’s Good Boy, he’s directed in a way that gives him as much depth as any human character.

But that’s no detriment to Brad Pitt. It’s both of these guys and the chemistry between them that make this into a consistently interesting survival thriller. And it gets very emotional. Especially near the end.

It gives us a great dog character and a gruff and likable Brad Pitt, and puts them both in a entertaining survival story that’s sure to bring up some tears.
