This movie is two hours and forty minutes long. But despite that long runtime, this is definitely not a slow-burn. It gets into the monster stuff right off the bat. Granted it does spend a lot of time teasing rather than showing the monster. Of course it’s effective though.

It starts with one really long almost real-time sequence that pretty much takes up maybe the whole first third of the movie, and leaving what the creature is up to the imagination until close to the end of it. Thus to be followed by some plot and whatever, before going into an even longer more epic sequence of monster action and terror.

Most of the movie is the characters chasing monsters, and these sequences are everything you can want from a monster movie. They are intense and fun. The monsters are done with CGI mostly if not entirely. Sometimes that CGI looks really good, sometimes it looks really bad. But either way, the designs of the creatures themselves is great. And those creatures and the action they’re in, is enough to make you look past those shaky effects.

The ending is kind of a let down. It ends on a pretty abrupt note, and certain aspects are kinda confusing or just flat-out bizarre. In my half-assed short on the movie, I said that ending tried to look smarter than it was. Now, I’m not sure. I don’t think it was meant to be philosophical or whatever, it just got weird. And not in a good way.

This is a very fun movie that kinda doesn’t stick the landing at the end. The effects aren’t great, but they’re put to exciting use. An almost three-hour-long creature feature that puts the pedal to the metal for all that time.
