It was rather impressive to see how well the CG had aged for a movie that came out in the 80s. It does an amazing job capturing the idea of what a living, breathing, human-like world inside of a cblah. er could be like. Of course, the light cycle segment was probably the best part of the movie as it works with the bikes' 90° turning limitation to create a tense action scene while keeping the riders' choices mostly logical. Of course, there's also just seeing the multiple types of transportation devices with different purposes and how the people within the world known as programs interact with others and what their roles are. I also appreciate how there is sort of a religious undertone in that users are essentially the equivalent of gods from the programs' perspective.
Unfortunately, I can't really give an equal amount of praise to the rest of the movie. I really liked Kevin as a laid-back gamer/programmer who wants to have fun every now and then, even in the most pressing of situations... at least in the real world. Once he enters Space Paranoids, his character kinda falls off. There were a lot of things that characters did and said that didn't make sense like why Kevin felt like he needed to keep his identity as a user hidden from Tron and Ram or how he knew that he could rebuild a Recognizer as a User. Hell, even the Light Cycles have an unexplained inconsistency with their 90° turns. Once they escape from the arena, they're just able to turn normally like a regular bike would. Not only that, but they also never leave wall trails again afterwards. I don't know if it's only able to turn on while in the arena or if its automatic or what. And I also don't know if the same applies to turning or if they can only turn in 90° angles while the wall trail mode is on, but these things kinda needed to be explained in the movie so we're not left wondering why it never comes back when it easily could've.
I did like the soundtrack, though. It does a good job being an accompanying piece for a cyber-world of mystery and wonder. It probably could've benefitted from having at least one or two synthesized instruments to fit with the world, but it's good as is.
Overall, it's a movie that's recognized for its technical accomplishment and rightfully so. It's just a shame that that's the only thing this movie is known for because everything else is just... bleh.
