Despite its historical setting, it's a small scale story about a formely famous violinist who descended into poverty due to alcoholism. He is given assistance from a sympathetic upper class man yet continues to struggle with personal demons that remain permanent obstacles to recovery. The acting is fine, but as with Vlacil's previous TV film, Sirius, it probably required a larger scope to do the material (in this case Tolstoy) justice.
