An absolutely soul-crushing show so far (2/3 through Season 1). It's mean and brutal and full of pain. Really quite different from most crime dramas.

Each season better than the one before.

Existing in sharp defiance of every stereotype about network TV being soft-serve disposable entertainment for the masses, this ABC show is a BRUTALLY depressing portrait of loss, grief, prejudice, addiction, and poverty. It's actually pretty well-written and well-made (same screenwriter as 12 Years a Slave), but after a couple episodes I was just like, "Nope, this is just too sad. I don't want this is in my life every week," and quit. More power to those who like it. I couldn't though.
