Looks like the wave of nostalgia is hitting the 90s and this is a freaking weird, visceral, intense experience that at some point loses a bit of steam. I did not find it scary, but unsettling, and enjoyed all the Cronenberg/Lynch inspiration. It helped that everything was well grounded and set up in the beginning, that later when it goes completely off the rails, you can buy it. Salazar and Keener are superheroes and I love gross magic rituals so yay.

Lisa is utterly unlikable, but it doesn’t matter, because Catherine Keener finally tops all her bad wife roles and finally becomes the Ultimate Bad Wife.

DAFUQ did I just watch

Rosa Salazar is freaking awesome!!! Not as good but does to Lynch/Cronenberg what Stranger Things has been doing to Spielberg & Co. Again, Rosa totally makes it worth it, these series walk a thin line of being pure trash to great entertainment.

It starts off a little slow, and while even the first episode is enjoyable, it's perhaps a bit unimaginative (girl lost in LA meets Inherent Vice.) Instead it develops into something Cronenbergian and surprisingly subtle in its themes. It's not just a naive, young female director beset by a pervy old man producer. There are layers here exploring subtle power dynamics with delightful subversions that never come off holier-than-thou. And the what-the-fuckness is clearly off the charts.
