David Callan is the top agent/assassin for the Security Service (British counterintelligence), but he is an embittered man who performs his duties "for Queen and country" under duress. This bleak, "Spy who Came in from the Cold"-style espionage drama concentrates on the seamy underside of covert operations: assassinations, blackmail and dirty dealing. (imdb)

Make allowances for its age (hey it's 50 this year) and you'll find an excellent hard nosed thriller a world away from the Bond glamour. At its time it was pretty unique and Woodward & Hunter are both really good, Hunter as Lonely, wow. Personally feel it tails off a bit in the last series. Pretty much pioneered the sub genre of putupon agents/enforcers trapped in a sleazy world whose morals were even lower than their somewhat ambiguous ones.Has the UK starch & depth that US series tend to lack.
