Gankutsuou is an anime loosely based on the novel The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. It tells the story of Albert Morcerf, a young aristocrat who happens to befriend a wealthy nobleman, The Count of Monte Cristo, through a series of bizarre events. Fascinated by the Count's charm, Albert invites him to meet his friends and family, all of whom happen to be part of the upper class society of Paris, France. (myanimelist.net)

This had the makings of a masterpiece; a gorgeous soundtrack, a great cast (can't imagine a more perfect Count) and an artstyle that made me feel like I was watching pure emotion transmuted into light and beamed straight into my brain. But I was let down by the writing and the many needless and detrimental changes to the source material; the dehumanized take on the Count and the shift to an underdeveloped future setting -- I guess Dumas' novel just wasn't anime enough without gundam battles.
