Really good, on par with the anime. 'modern day' stuff was unnecessary, but the character corruption was sublime. Hard to think of a better set of child leads too.

Some melodramatic scenes and some pretty bad looking animation (dropped bombs) and backdrops (running through the rubble in the beginning) couldn't ruin this film for me. What this adaptation did that the anime from 1988 didn't was present the relative as more of a person, allowing us to see why she did what she did. If you enjoyed the anime, you should enjoy this as well.

Part historical piece, part metaphor for post-war Japan, Grave of the Fireflies is at times beautiful and heartwarming, and at others utterly devastating. An excellent film about the tragedies of war that occur even far from the battlefields.

Heartbreaking and not at all what I thought it would be back when I was a younger man (why is this listed at from 2005?!). A tale showing the unbearable suffering of war, particularly nuclear war, and in a way that would be too much to bear if it were live action.

This live-action version is hard to get, but worth watching, especially if you love the Miyazaki version too.
