A carefully managed and authorised portrait, this skims the surface of Fonda's life, while never exploring the fascinating dichotomy between her desperate attempts to please her disapproving male figures and her underlying passive resentment of it; this might have provided a more interesting and in-depth view of its subject - there's perhaps a little too much hagiographic doting here that is somewhat off-putting. Still enjoyable purely from a film history perspective.

Even if you think you know Jane Fonda, you don't know Jane Fonda. Her honesty and vulnerability here are almost astonishing. I would have hardly thought it possible, but my respect and love for her increased on viewing this. Finally a documentary that does justice to its extraordinary subject.

This seemed more like an autobiography than a biography. Still, it was well made, and I enjoyed it.
