Surprisingly pensive stand-up comedy set presents Carmichael as an engaging and endearing presence; the first half is standard “confessional” comedy with Carmichael dancing gleefully around some home truths, giving way to a more serious second half which begins to delve deeply (and emotionally) into Carmichael’s own sense of identity and his fractured family dynamics. Frustrating in that it abruptly stops just as the real points of interest begin, but still a unique and fascinating experience.

An intimate confessional about himself and his family history. And repeated dialogue with the crowd. I've never seen anything like it.

Not a comedy special so much as a group therapy session. This is not a complaint.
