Even at four and a half hours you can feel it straining to accommodate the complexity of the man's character and accomplishments, efforts actually hindered by the greatest hits structure that was basically mandatory for this kind of thing. But for this kind of thing it's above-average and Winfield, who is the center of just about every scene, commands them completely; his absence of big screen leading roles post-SOUNDER was an American tragedy. It's hard out there for a big gay Black man
