As a representation of what watching the original must have been this is probably quite poor. The techniques required for a reconstruction based on stills completely changes the pacing editing and direction, not to mention the performances. On its own merits, though, it's still a compelling look at a lost film and pretty entertaining. The costumes and makeup are excellent.

An improbable script, even for 1927, is saved by Chaney and atmosphere. The restoration does what it can with a Universal flavor to the music. I'd advise watching Mark of the Vampire to get the gist of the plot, then the restoration.

Hard to rate. Certainly it looks good. But this restored version does not make much sense sometimes.

Restoration version, because this is the most famous of lost films.
