One of the better failed pilots, and West's performance is probably the fullest realization of this kind of character. Note that John Swartzwelder's own pilot PISTOL PETE from a few years later is basically this same premise/tone transplanted to a Western, and failed just as fabulously. (The creators of THE GRINDER, idea-grafting onto legal procedural, diluted the insane artifice with a healthy dose of self-consciously cloying sentiment and thus were able to at least get a full season out.)

A failed pilot most notable for being co-written by Conan O'Brien, amusing in places and dull in others. It seems like it should have been obvious to the creators from the beginning that it was too dark for network television.
