It has the look of a TV movie made 10 years before this one, and the jokey tone of "Pirates of the Caribbean"--with only slightly better acting. It's all too polite to be memorable, much less good... if it had more energy (a LOT more), it might have achieved "so bad it's good" camp status. It's almost worth sitting through to see Patrick Stewart's demented smile as he yells "Thar she blows!"

I'll be frank, I don't like Moby Dick as a novel. It's got some great lines, the most memorable of which are in Star Trek II, but aside from that it's plain tiresome to read. The cinematography is a bit bland and there's nothing technically great about the film. However it is quite a faithful adaption of the novel, to be sure. With Patrick Stewart as Captain Ahab you know you've got a good cast. If you like the novel, you'll appreciate this. If you don't, this won't turn you around.

An abhorrent butchering.
