Despite this being a Japanese (also Dutch kinda) TV co-production of Swedish language literature/art, this for some reason is my primary source of national pride in terms of film. Uniquely wholesome cartoon that emphasizes emotional nuance, a sense of belonging, positive relationships & intimacy with nature all while maintaining a quietly eerie sense of isolation, mystery & adventure. Despite its otherworldly charm, it never feels like patronizing escapism, which is amazing for a kids program.

All millenial Finns grew up with the Moomins. A generation of children experienced their first laughs, cries and night terrors from this series that tackles silly fantastical antics of fantastical creatures, but also digs deeply into moral ideologies. The source material was actually sociopolitical satire aimed at adults. Adaptation to children's series hasn't completely removed its teeth. Horror episodes are still, 30 years later, absolutely horrifying.
