I love this era of LA: I'll take you underneath City Hall inside the old rum running tunnels to the King Eddy, explain the esoteric weirdness of the Central Library (before and after it burnt down), and the legacy of Manly P Hall. Yet the 1st season - with these trappings as a backdrop and a wonderfully grotesque start - ends up being just Law and Order allowed more gratuity. If it weren't for my wife being a background actor, I probably wouldn't have stuck through it.

I wanted to love this, but it just doesn’t compare in class or style to the original. Above all, the score was unbearable to me—making it feel cheap and hokey. The scenarios presented to Perry Mason were over the top and contrived.

S01

There's something compelling about 1930s L.A.--and that's the main reason to watch this. The big problem is the writing...it's just not very good. Clearly, they wanted Perry Mason's back story to be REALLY messy (success!), but there are so many strange choices along the way (an Aimee Semple McPherson knock-off?...making Paul Drake black??), and unconvincing dialogue with too many modern turns of phrase. Even so, watchable enough, thanks to good actors and great production design.

Un Perry Mason antieroe nella Los Angeles anni '30. Non mantiene praticamente nulla dello spirito dell' originale a parte i nomi dei protagonisti, ma questa svolta noir non è necessariamente un male. Purtroppo ci mette un po' ad ingranare ma poi si riprende e continua a migliorare anche nella seconda stagione. Non fa certo gridare al capolavoro ma è un buon prodotto, peccato per la cancellazione.
