Spöksonaten

Strindberg's play seems like a cry of rage against an anthropic, all too anthropic universe, even if the grounds for that judgment seem rather unclear, if not a little crazed. This is just a filmed rehearsal recorded in 2000, and the first two acts don't leave much of an impression, but things pick up in the third. No doubt it's an important early modernist work (written in 1907), but it's hard to see the enduring appeal that led Bergman to stage this play four times between 1941 and 2000.
