Has some interesting ideas but is painfully hampered by its TV sensibilities.

There's lots of fun stuff here; every character who overacts does so in a different way, the brightly-colored cyberpunk future is a fun aesthetic, and the murderous hockey robot, *iconic*. But at the center is Jake Cardigan, one of the least engaging protagonists in all of fiction. There's no reason to empathize with his quest to get his family back; they want nothing to do with him, and he seems to want them just because they're His. And this makes the whole movie boring as hell. Disappointing.

This was the setup for the series that followed, and it did a fine job. It introduces the viewer to the characters and the futuristic world of which the adventures would occur.
