The only real joke here was how unrealistically cruel the attractive and rich people were, which isn't really all that funny. Am I suppose to find humor in people being outright assholes to people less fortunate than them without any sense of irony or humor? Not only that, but I find the disgusting, ugly characters to be outright unlikable too. Am I suppose to root for some ugly douchebags whose problems are more often than not their own fault?

Far ahead of its time, this acerbic dark satire continues to be all too relevant. I can't help but feel it sadly alienated much of its potential audience in how mercilessly it lampooned everyone, from the rich and powerful to the deformed and impoverished. Hard to get mass appeal when there's no idealized everyman character to cling to as to our deluded perception of normalcy--the "normal" doesn't exist and the social mores that color our perceptions of this mythical construct are toxic waste.
