Pointless as this was, it was nowhere near as catastrophic as the avalanche of reality-TV it helped to cause.

The original run of this and a few of the subsequent seasons was a real blast of reality (a genre that was mostly nonexistent at the time). It quickly devolved to conflict characters purposely being thrust into the situations rather than natural conflict arising.
