Colm Meaney subtly conveys the conflicts of an orthodox Catholic father who is torn between his disgust at his daughter's immorality and his love for the girl and her baby (the "Snapper'). Touching and funny.

R - Watching with a modem eye, it's hard to fathom that the inciting incident is a rape, and this was never even referred to in the film, or in any of the discourse around it at the time. And this was a huge hit in Ireland. Moving past that, if you can, the film is a total joy, carried most of the way by Colm Meaney's performance as an old fashioned man's man who morphs into what was then called a new man. Riotously funny an awful lot of the time.

A guilty pleasure that's actually worth watching, even for those not fond of the subject matter. Laughs at itself, and you can't help but laugh with it.

Saw this in a movie theatre, and I loved it as another Frears slice-of-life of the middle class, and fun to see Meaney outside of his starfleet kit.
