War & Peace

Top-notch costumes and sets and the visuals are further enhanced by the cinematography, with a couple of jaw dropping shots. The music was surprisingly good as well, though sometimes a little overdramatic. It's real shortcoming though, is that it tries to compress a massive work of literature, and some character developments felt rushed, although I feel it remains faithful overall. Some of the cast also felt a little out of place, especially compared to Dano, who did an amazing job as Pierre.

A bunch of people make many poor decisions for bad reasons, but slowly learn along the way that battle is rarely glorious, that life is a confusing muddle, that it’s good to care about others, and that who has sex with whom behind whose back might not be as big a deal in the long run as it seems at the time. Mostly well done. Watching this ten years after it was first screened, what strikes the viewer is the impossibility of a British production like this being filmed in Russia any time soon.

Faaar too long.

solid
