Nice idea, but the setting and story aren't nearly well enough fleshed out. Nothing is really explained properly and the ending is disappointing. The action and visuals are nice but this could have used a lot more substance. I really liked the dark atmosphere throughout. And the music during the end credits is way better than the music in the rest of the film -- not sure why they didn't use that composer and orchestra for the whole score.

Kind of unclear at times. Not sure I liked them having voices when the original they didn't. Some of the scenes seem like they were just to add to an already short runtime. Still, wasn't that bad.

characters well made, but story not as interesting as it could be

"9" contains some great looking animation, but ultimately doesn't succeed due to a lacking and seriously confused storyline. Why these dolls come to life speaking English, with a huge array of knowledge, and have to fight off machines wearing exoskeletons-- I simply can't explain, and neither does the movie.

The setting is a great tool for social commentary that goes underutilized, but overall I think there is a lot more in this movie than what the story tells us.

The trailer for this movie was ten times better than the movie. It had a tight coheed and cambria soundtrack with intense action and awesome creature. The movie was just boring. It had absolutely no character devolopement and it was the same thing happening over and over again. an hour of sitting through this movie was grueling so thank goodness it wasn't any longer than that. The visuals were pretty cool but that's pretty much it.

the characters and story are as boring as they get. animation isn't that bad, but that doesn't save this film. I couldn't even bring myself to watch the whole movie (which happens only on very rare occasions)

The film felt like one big action scene and doesn't take enough time to introduce the characters or story. The running time and action scenes make up for it, but I'll take the short film any day over this.

I was not what expected, but still steampunk is so awesome.

I've never seen a dark Animation movie before. It was unfortionally not as good as I expected it to be. I liked the fact that there was quite a fast pase, and didn't get boring easily. I didn't get 'sucked in' to the movie, which I find important. Overall: Not a bad movie, but not the greatest animation in history either

The ending made for a kinda underwhelming film. Didn't spoil the entire story, but just barely.

A good movie which is slightly spoiled by poor casting decisions, and a weird and unnecessary ending. It is, however, nice to see a CG film which is not a children's comedy, for once.

9 has fantastic art direction, with great character design. Unfortunately it is plagued by a number of other issues which make it a chore to watch. Viewers are dropped into a world with very little explanation, and the slow reveal of details about the world does not flesh out the characters themselves, which makes the dramatic elements of the film unsustainable as they lack emotional weight. Might appeal to a younger crowd who will accept two dimensional character archetypes without development.

Really interesting and unique. I wish more movies had the guts to actually be the correct length, instead of padding itself out to the seemingly required 90 minute mark.

I loved the world, its mythology, I loved the animation, the character design, I loved the ending and some of the action, I just didn't like the story.

Incredible concept, but mediocre realisation.

Pretty, and has an interesting setting and backstory, but the plot is rather simplistic.

Am I the highest ranking here? Perhaps so. Anyway, I adore this movie and view it (both plot, obviously and less obviously, characters) as an allegory for something much deeper than a lot of mainstream stuff, both politically and psychologically. It's not the deepest movie ever, don't get me wrong, but I appreciate the fact you can think about it. Besides that, some great animation, great scenery (sucker for this stuff), and some genuinely memorable scenes.

Great visuals but brings nothing new to the table.

Not as awesome as I hoped it would be, with a rather disappointing ending, the film still manages to be fucking amazing. The few action scenes in the movie were rather well done, and the story was both dark and well told, if you don't think too hard about it.

A movie that just needed a few more talented people working on it, 9 suceeds on the efforts of Shane Acker. The visuals are gorgeous with the level of detail and creativity that surpasses Ratatouille, and set a (very different) mood almost as effectively. A simple story with an ambiguous ending, 9 could have been excellent with a stronger script. The dialogue in particular is terrible. Voice acting is good, pacing fine, and any movie with a cobra-spider-robot-creepydoll gets my vote.

The art direction is just about the only thing working for this film. Drastically needed character development and explanation.

What? No seriously.... What? Also if the dolls were made from pieces of the scientist soul, why was one a girl?

Great animation for Tim Burton; the ending was a little disappointing.

I'm shocked that not more people love this. I was expecting to come here and see a 80 PSI, but no. 46. What? The characters are engaging, the visuals not exactly top-of-the-line CGI but perfect for the film's atmosphere, and while I was slightly skeptical for the first half of it upon first viewing (the pacing is a bit off) the last half blew me away and I loved it even more on second viewing. The religious undertones at the end are a bit bothersome. Also, I haven't seen the original short.

Cool visuals and action, and Shane Acker seems like an exciting new talent provided someone else writes the script next time. The story is basically post apocalyptic paint-by-numbers; other than being about sock puppets (and exceedingly flat characters), there's little that differentiates the plot from Terminator Salvation.

this movie had such potential with the story line but it was painful to sit thru.

Flat plot with fantastic visuals.

I liked it and the things it dealt with; such as the competing nature of the self, dealing with the origin of life while looking to make one. That combined with the adventure and the action make this a good movie to watch. I actually liked it better than Coraline.

Post-apocalyptic computer cartoon by Acker, set in a rusty, dusty, color-deprived future. "But life," intones the rumbling narrator at the outset, "must go on," even if only in the form of Lilliputian cloth-doll automatons hounded by Brobdingnagian mechanized cutlery.

Excellent animation, terrible story.

9 is a nice and well animated story of friendchip and solidarity. Okay the story got some flaws, but the style is amazing.It always reminds me a bit on the good old Tim Burton style. "9" plays in a dark and dystopian world. Almost everything is destroyed and dead. Those puppets are quiet cool ,too. Good work and I hope to see more by Acker in common years.

Why oh why must it end so horribly?

The underlying story either didn't make very much sense or I failed to follow it, miserably. That said, the film was very entertaining to watch and has some great animation and design. I wish it would have been a bit longer...

I stopped watching when the spunky girl came in and started kicking ass. Not to mention that the visuals were incredibly mediocre.

This movie wouldn't be close to a 55 if the visuals weren't SO stunning. The story is empty and the plot is silly and predictable. The only thing that saves this film is that it might look better than any CGI movie ever. If you're looking for story, go elsewhere!

One of those movies that you watch once, enjoy, but wouldn't want to watch over and over again.

This would make a pretty good video game, as it's basically a series of action sequences with just the right amount of obstacles strung together with lulls of plot. It's fun to watch, the visuals are enticing and the short length ensures it doesn't get old, but it also feels a bit lacking even with all the heavier stuff about humanity.

It may have too many action scenes and the story may be predictable, but for me it was a blast. Nothing had moved me so much in the cinema for a long time. By the way, I loved the ending and I don't understand the bad reviews this has had here.

Very nice looking post-apocaplyptic adventure but the plot is already somewhat used.
