Not Hitchcock's best, but still worth looking at.

Well shot and well acted, but not very thrilling. Doesn't really suck you in like most Hitchcock films but they key moments in the film such as the windmill, the hotel room, and the crash are extremely well done.

While I could feel the tension building as the story progressed, I just couldn't bring myself to care. Bad casting leads to this film being one of Hitch's least involving.

I can't for the life of me, understand how Joel McCrea became such a box office star. There's just something about his delivery of lines that rings so hollow. The story itself is pretty banal and the only highlights of the film are George Sanders and Laraine Day. I never realized how cute she was.

this screenplay probably never should have been greenlit, almost nothing in it works, and it loses its own protagonist by act 3, but i suppose everyone was under pressure to make patriotic films in 1940, even masters of suspense. the highlights are george sanders, who is as charismatic as ever, and the lovely cinematography which may be mate's best, but they're not enough to save the movie.

The plane crash is amazing, but the rest is pretty hammy, and with hardly any suspense to speak of. I don't think I ever cared once about what was happening to McCrea, and frequently didn't notice when he was gone. Probably the worst Hitchcock I've seen.

many angles in the film, especially the ones during the windmill scene are often used in today's first person shooter video games. brilliant.

Truly one of the lesser Hitchcocks. I could have sworn the famous windmill scene was at the climax of the film, but it comes much earlier. The ending is terribly lame. And I didn't like Joel McCrea at all... George Sanders would have been a far more enjoyable lead.
