The fact that it was released merely 16 years after the end of the war must have been quite emotionally straining to a lot of people. I don't know how people felt about the actual trials in 45-46, but I assume they weren't widely reported. Therefore this movie is both important (although not 100 % accurate) and scary to the same people. I don't claim to know anything about the actual trials, but the emotions this movie evoked upon me, will haunt me even in the after-life.

a wonderful reproduction of the nuremberg trials, that is mostly objective in the content, but also subjective in the manner of portrayal. clift does a wonderful job, and maximilian schell is the highlight, even though tracy does a great job, he is outshined by those previously mentioned. this is an amazing movie that should be recognized for it's underdogs, rather than it's stalwart names.

A hard-hitting film about a heavy topic. The film's success is due to its impartiality, trying to show both sides of the story. The direction and the performances are perfect also. I recommend seeing.

Decent courtroom drama. Also a very interesting trial; I'm wondering how accurate it is.

Excellent courtroom scenes are brought down drastically by all other scenes which are incredibly dull, as well as some other minor flaws. It's main flaw though is that it offers (for painfully obvious reasons) simplistic answers to the very complex issues it brings up; one could say it's amazing that such dilemmas were even brought up in Hollywood but, being 1961, this film is simply an American institution's obvious, unsatisfying response to the Milgram experiments and the Eichmann trial.

If the actual Nuremberg Trials were anything like this, I wish I could have been alive to see them. I was blown away by some of the performances I saw in the courtroom, and I especially noticed that many of the speeches were done in a long continuous shot. Big points especially to Maximilian Schell and Richard Widmark, who both give some great speeches and play off the other actors very well.

What a great movie. Kramer shoots the court proceedings with a straight forward style, adding just the right amount of precise camera movements to highlight the characters' emotions when the scene called for it. The performances are superb all throughout, with Maximilian Schell shining the brightest. Although I've thought a lot in my life about the subjects presented here, this movie made me think even more deeply about them.

Gripping film with some great performances. The procedural narrative is strong; each court room scene was engaging on its own and clearly contributed to the overall story (though these scenes are painted in broad strokes and are occasionally bit heavy-handed). The direction feels odd; the opening montage felt almost like French New Wave (which got me excited), but then there are old-fashioned rear-projection shots and some awkward EMOTIONAL zooms that are clumsy and distracting.

Tracy's final summation is a bit stiff (and arguably ignores a lot of the lessons we've presumably learned over the course of the film).

All in all I was pleasantly surprised by this. It is a bit naive and simplistic part of the time, the Dietrich subplot is kinda cheesy, and the cast itself - big names and all - is so-so, but then again much of this is genuinely interesting and thought-provoking and that really tips the scale in the film's favor.

A really good look at the postwar realities of how the world tried to deal with the enormity of what happened in WW2. The film is filled with excellent speeches and a lot of food for thought about blame and culpability.

All of the principal actors are pretty good (despite a touch of scenery chewing) and the story is pretty compelling. The Marlene Dietrich scenes are unnecessary, and Kramer uses some showy camera movement in an attempt to keep things interesting, but comes off as awkward.
