Ryan Gosling shows in this movie why he is the uncrowned king of indie films. Gosling is frighteningly convincing as the young believer, so convinsing that we the viewers almost start to buy what he is selling.

This didn't impress me that much. While it is a somewhat interesting character study this felt contrived in order to force out a dramatic story.

It's all Gosling's show as this tries to be a cleverer and more complex version of 'American History X'. Sadly the latter is superior in visual flair and story structure, and at the end of the day, one ends up thinking more about how Gosling would have tackled Norton's part, than one considers this indie movie and it's implications.

You're almost compelled to mark Ryan Gosling as a very underrated actor after seeing this performance. What a difficult character to portray, and yet despite a fantastic performance, you'll usually never hear his name creep into the conversation about great 21st-century actors. Quick-paced, in-depth dialogue was a highlight here, and while yes, the ideas are controversial or, if you will, "offensive", there is obvious intelligence within them. And no, THAT'S NOT ME AGREEING WITH THOSE IDEAS.

Ryan Gosling is arguably the best actor of his generation.

Props to Gosling, as usual, and props to the ending. At first I didn't think I'd like this very much but it became quite interesting and original. It was more of a mind fuck than I thought it would be and I did end up enjoying the script quite a bit. There are some poor choices made occasionally in regards to direction but meh, not a big deal.

Poor direction. The acting is well done. And the story is great. I was also let down by the ending. Very interesting film. Worth a watch.

WHAT a character study. The direction's fine; the photography is humble. This isn't a problem when you have such a brave script with a knockout performance. Every bit as engrossing as AHX. I'd be interested to know the budget.

Great performance, very good movie, VERY DUMB ENDING!

I can't really point out anything that was necessarily wrong with it, but it didn't resonate with me nearly the way I thought it would. The most memorable thing about it is the ending, which is incredible, but everything up until then is basically a blur.

Really well-made film that got a raw deal in the U.S. due to the subject matter. Shows Gosling's talent at a young age.
