Oh boy, those children movies from the '80s sure are fucked up. Nice (or maybe it would be better to say scary) puppets. But it seems Henson was too fascinated by his own puppets to write an acceptable script. Show it for your kids, if you want them to have nightmares.

I will say this movie is cool in a lot of ways. I liked the look and feel of it, and I appreciated the originality of the fantasy type story. Unfortunately, the plot is rather weak in regards to the journey itself. Every single problem seemed to have a solution by meeting someone at just the right time or someone on the journey having a special power we didn't know about until the problem arose. Story is geared towards little kids but it might be a tad to dark for some of them.

Dark crystal is difficult to classify as a movie but its presentation is one of a kind. Jim Henson seemed to draw most of his inspiration from classic fantasy novels and JRR Tolkien rather than the run of the mill fairytales. His genius is comparable with Ralph Bakshi. This film is not really for kids and it's more of an adult alternate world fantasy. It was definitely ahead of its time in many ways and not really easily mimicked. The atmosphere and surreal nature of this film is unique.

Its always nice when film makers attempt something different, this time resulting in the only movie I can recall, in which there are no human beings. Too bad then, that it is wholly disenchanting, largely due to the protagonist puppets, technologically incapable of conveying emotion. This would do nicely for kids in the 80s, but today virtually every aspect of it is horribly dated. This fantasy fable is for movie historians with a special interest in Henson only.

I can't really be objective about a movie I loved so much as a kid, but watching as an adult I can say that it's a richly imagined and beautifully puppeted world, but sometimes awkward in its dramatic moments. Also, the Skeksi banquet scene is brilliant.

A muppet like fantasy adventure. Not bad at it's time, kids will still probably enjoy it; though adults will probably find that the story doesn't age well.

Oh how I miss American children's fantasy films in the 80s where filmmakers were not afraid to evoke a genuine feeling of dread and oblivion. Today all we get is empty, family friendly CGI crapfests. Henson's storytelling here is rather dull and overly simplistic (compared to fellow animators, Svankmajer's absurdist wit and the Brothers Quay's haunting atmosphere is far superior) but the world depicted here is fascinatingly grim and the creatures grotesque and frightening.

When I saw this as a kid, it absolutely blew my mind open, inside out, upside down, inwards, imploded, exploded, washed it clean, whatever you want to call it, it's embedded in my memory forever. The world brought to life by special effects here are more enjoyable than most movies out today.

Firstly, this is definitely not a kids film (though I'm sure they pitched it to the studio as such). The grand themes and serious narration are aimed at a higher intellect. Certainly it has some high aspirations, and I credit the attempt, but it falls rather short for mine. It's creepy, but lacks excitement. The Skeksis become tiresome and despite apparently dire consequences I just didn't care about Jen's quest. Oh, and his voice is truly annoying.
