Antibirth

This movie kind of feels like that friend you have who constantly keeps trying to namedrop things so you'll think they're cool and hip. It knows all the cool things to reference (Cronenberg, stoner culture, punk records), but rather than trying to understand what makes those influences so captivating, it goes for a simplistic reading of those themes and awkwardly tries to make them fit together into a cohesive narrative.

Right from the opening scenes you can see how horribly amateur and cheap it all is, mumbled lines and silly visual effects do not endear me to this type of horror film. It comes as no surprise at all to find that this is the writer-director's first feature length film that plays as a compilation of bits from better properties. Funnily enough the posters made it look vaguely interesting

30 mins in and nothing happens. Pacing is all off, there's no clear narrative.

Now, what the fuck was that? Brazenly provocative horror film plays as if Cronenberg in full body horror mode had directed 'ROSEMARY'S BABY', and while it can't compete, it still has its wicked charms, especially in Lyonne's searing portrait of repellent ugliness, and Tilly's unhinged loon. The deliberately sordid set-up is hard to take at first, but becomes more... endearing? as the film progresses, leading to a bat-shit finale. Not a 'jump-scare' horror film, but still profoundly unsettling.

A good cast in what plays like a lumpen-horror bio of one of the characters from 'Orange Is The New Black' when she finally gets out of prison. Not particularly scary but moderately entertaining.
