Coup de chance

In 'Coup de Chance,' Woody Allen serves up a lukewarm comedy that falls short of a full-fledged laugh riot. With a plot as predictable as a Parisian café menu and humor as stale as a day-old croissant, this film might leave you longing for the glory days of Allen's earlier work. Watch it for a few chuckles and some pretty Parisian scenery, but don't expect a cinematic tour de force.

Few directors have tackled the topic of relationships as extensively as Woody Allen. In Coup de chance, love, jealousy and infedelity are explored in lighthearted and breezy fashion, which makes the movie fly by pretty quickly. Vittorio Storaro and Allen are also a match made in heaven, love seeing them experimenting with lighting and lenses.

L'actrice principale est radieuse, Niels Schneider est mignon, Melvil Poupaud efficace. Petit Allen, sans prétention.

Alain represents tychism. Jean represents anancism. Camille represents agapism. The fact that Camille comes out on top, with both Alain and Jean dying due to their natures, suggests that Allen is a fan of evolutionary love. Indeed, Allen's oeuvre could be described as agapistic. If this is Allen's final film, then this all seems very fitting.

It's the very high level of filmmaking you expect from Woody Allen, in French and set in Paris, and perhaps trying to channel Chabrol (despite appearances, it's a suspense film and not a romantic comedy). I was just kind of disappointed that it doesn't really go anywhere great.

Feels like Woody Allen has been making this same "love triangle + murder" movie every 5 years or so. This French variation doesn't bring much of anything new to the table, and although I find him incapable of making a boring movie, the ending here felt especially phoned in.
