Two interwoven stories. The first is a biography of anarchist Sakae Osugi which follows his relationship with three women in the 1920s. The second centers around two 1960s' students researching Osugi's theories.

I had a lot of problems with this movie, but my main one would be that it unsuccessfully weaves two story-lines into one narrative. I appreciate what it's trying to do: contrasting the free love of the 1920s anarchists with the free love of the 1960s (a time when the movement had gone worldwide). But it feels like two movies in one; which also means twice the length as normal, along with some jarring editing and time jumps. I got bored after a while.

Stylish but mostly pretentious chat. If you like Godard maybe you'll like this too.

While some of the "experimental" artiness seems quite dated, the themes concerning the relationship between social revolution and sexual revolution, and between "free love" and "women's rights", are pursued a fair distance, along with an unusual willingness to examine the contradictions of the "bourgeois" "intellectual" and the "revolutionary" "activist", etc., framed with an air of failure and tragedy, and an interesting attempt at implicating all of this in the filmmaking process itself.

Very compelling camerawork, but despite the density of the plot(?), I couldn't help feeling it could have been more effective if it were shorter (I watched the 205-minute version). Definitely will require another viewing.

Director's Cut BlurayRip no MakingOff.

To Adam P-D: I love Godard but didn't enjoy this at all.
