This excellent, suspenseful thriller by Finnish director Matti Kassila inaugurated a series of 1960's crime dramas that featured the friendly ace sleuth, Inspector Palmu (Joel Rinne). Kassila has used a technique of telling the story from two different perspectives in time, and he manages to pull it off to the effect of added tension. Sharp humor also transforms an already effective story into an even better tale. Murder, blackmail, alcoholism, and intrigue challenge Inspector Palmu to his limits. (All Movie Guide)

It was pretty fun, although maybe a bit long for the depth of the mystery. It's one of those movies where the fun is in seeing the crazy cast of characters and seeing things unravel, and it works pretty well, even if the most interesting character is the murder victim. A Poirot type film.

Charming despite the crime itself being very simple, and Palmu erring on the side of Sherlockian psychics instead of deduction at times. The character of Bruno Rygseck, a manic-depressive drunkard, is a great archetype of a Finn and I would have loved to see more of him.
