Interesting mood all along. I don't get the ending though

Bleak little film that tries so hard to be dark that it often forgets that it also wants to be funny. I was completely won over by Roberts in the terrific Submarine but here, trying to recapture the deadpan charm, he fails, taking on too many tasks as writer and director as well as star. He doesn’t help himself by making Hirsch’s new neighbour such a sneering creep from the start that there’s never any doubt where this is going.
