Questioned as a murder suspect, solid (but drunk) citizen Al Willis attacks his police questioners, is beaten, and swears vengeance against them. Next night, Lieut. Parks is murdered; Willis is the only suspect in the eyes of tough Chief Conroy, who pursues him doggedly despite lack of evidence. The obsessed Conroy is dismissed from the force, but continues to harass Willis, who flees to a sleazy town on the Mexican border. Of course, Conroy follows. But which is crazy, Conroy or Willis? Solid B-movie crime drama...it's almost sweet, actually. Certainly not dark or complex enough to earn real film noir status, but quite watchable. Although there's absolutely no way Jo Ann Greer's singing voice could ever come out of Gloria Grahame, she certainly livens things up. Some costumer with a sense of camp has her dressed like the Madonna--almost beatific--in the last scene. A pleasant way to pass 86 minutes.

Russell Metty's nighttime photography is as good as Sterling Hayden's sonorous acting is bad.

Sterling Hayden's a pissed-off ex-cop who's gone rogue, Gloria Grahame's so sultry she looks half-asleep, and Gene Barry's loonier than the snake that married the garden hose. Plus Chuck Connors shows up early on (the only guy they could find as tall as Sterling).

"Naked Alibi" begins with a cast of characters that are hard to root for, but everything shifts once the setting moves to Border City and Gloria Grahame appears. Her presence invigorates the film, and she skillfully engages with both male leads, bringing a dynamic energy to the screen.

Although there are some implausible plot elements, this is a pretty good noir. Stellar performances from Hayden and Grahame (whose character is suspiciously close to her part in THE BIG HEAT). The film takes an unpredictable second act twist, at least it was far different from what I was expecting. The story is paced very well and has some brutal scenes, fine cinematography and generally good dialogue. Maybe not one of the greats, but definitely worth checking out, especially for Grahame fans.
