i understand the function of filippovna subplot, but it drags on and becomes especially too caricature-like for the film's own good when she meets with the mayor. otherwise, while a little pretentious and self-important like the main character, this is a solid and rather ambitious drama taking on much broader subjects and is able to frame them cogently.

A sharp, darkly comic commentary on noise pollution. Tim Robbins' character isn't going to to listen to car alarms anymore, dammit, and he'll break the law to shut them up if he has to: it's the kind of concept you could see popping up on a David E. Kelley legal show for a subplot; it's a pleasant surprise to find an entire feature focused on such. Robbins is great, as are William Hurt and Bridget Moynahan in support roles. Deserves more attention.
