In this early film Norman McLaren shot crystal formations through a low-power microscope, using polarized light with the lower part of the picture masked off. The film was then rewound and a scene of dancers was filmed. (nfb.ca)

Rather charming, especially when you are aware of how rare color films of the '30s are. I kept wondering what those dancing art students were thinking. "Will I get extra credit for this?" "Does Norman fancy me?" "Am I cute enough?" "Will everyone think I'm a fool?"

I hate ballet. It's my least favorite part of The Red Shoes, it's my least favorite part of Singin' in the Rain, I just don't like it at all. The saving grace of this one was the crystal effect, which I thought was really cool.

Pretty, but just a camera experiment.
