Radical

I've mainly liked Derbez in silly comedic roles so Radical seems a moderate departure, but he does well while still injecting a little levity into a dreary situation. One part City of God (2002) to three parts every inspirational teacher movie ever, this film has the benefit of being based on a true story. Visually spartan on colour reinforces the theme of neglect. The kids aren't too annoying, there's less melodrama than the trailer suggests & the uplifting ending all work in the film's favour.

"Radical" is an enjoyable and uplifting film with a strong lead performance and genuine passion for its story. However, its predictability and messy execution prevent it from being anything more than a forgettable feel-good movie.
