Solas

Beautiful and moving--at times, gut-wrenchingly so. Fantastic acting, especially by María Galiana, who plays the Mother--a classic example of "less is more" when it comes to acting.

Underseen. True, the amount of abuse the mother absorbs w/out ever internalizing any of it is more appropriate 2 martyrs than people. However, her ultra-traditional background & the actress give her a heartfelt plausibility. Far more real is the daughter who's as relentlessly flawed as the mother is implacably maternal. There's a lot of grit - both the dirty & sturdy kinds -on display which gives it all a level of realism & power far more absorbing & moving than the much higher profile Volver.

Solas is extremely sad and moving. Every character in this movie stands on the abyss of their own emotional hell. This is touching,especially the fact, that I can relive those situations. Zambrano did a great job. Deserves more attention

I suppose this could inspire discussion about what it means to be alone or how the characters deal with it or aging or whatever, the deal is that there's a lot of real neat stuff going on here. Now the ending, things start to spin out of control in a fantasy hollywood kind of way that cheapens the depth of some of the characters.
