Soldier in the Rain

At times ungainly mish-mash of heavy handed comedy and sentimental drama works as well as it does thanks to the performances; McQueen's uncharacteristically broad hayseed is a treat to watch, and Weld has some nice moments as a ditzy blonde, but Gleason steals it, in a towering, touching performance as the quietly desperate and despairing commander.

Pretty sad fare from Blake Edwards, and McQueen holds up the end of a feeble-minded side kick, well, horribly. For what slack McQueen leaves, Gleason's chubby self could only hold up so much, even if he did a fine job. I might have giggled a moment or two, but this one passed by without note.
