In 1836 General Santa Anna and the Mexican army is sweeping across Texas. To be able to stop him, General Sam Huston needs time to get his main force into shape. To buy that time he orders Colonel William Travis to defend a small mission on the Mexicans' route at all costs. Travis' small troop is swelled by groups accompanying Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett, but as the situation becomes ever more desperate Travis makes it clear there will be no shame if they leave while they can. It's full of western's clichés and 'beautiful' patriotic crap, but well, I've found it quite entertaining.

Poorly directed and overblown. A number of good performances keep this watchable.

An overwrought and bloated epic western that is full of patriotic speeches and historical inaccuracies. Well shot and has decent action scenes.

John Wayne was the credited director of only two films, The Alamo and The Green Berets. Both are stinkers. The Alamo is the better stinker, but he should have stuck to his day job.

John Wayne didn't have to be a director to be remembered as a legendary star. This isn't the worst western I've ever seen but how you can take story of The Alamo and make it this bland and uninspired is beyond me.
