The Good Catholic

No matter what you might think this is about from the title, you're wrong. IOW, don't not see the film because of it. It's neither a polemic mocking religious faith, nor does it say anything about religion except maybe why don't we all just sit down and start over. All four primary characters are superbly cast, including Danny Glover who is about 3 steps above anything I've ever seen him in before. The subject matter is handled respectfully, albeit with liberal amounts of humor which zeros in on

Not a bad attempt at dealing with a difficult topic, but the three clerics (and our red-headed temptress) are a bit simplistic as characters and in terms of their respective ages probably unrepresentative of how the drama would play out in today's church.

The Good Catholic bored me. The acting performances are underwhelming (particularly Spicer). The writing is banal. The film doesn't tackle a novel subject. About one in five priests admit to having no faith in God. It's a job, and I think many people know that, yet this film presents the subject as something original and groundbreaking. To me, it's just not a terribly interesting subject. I guess it could be, but this film simply doesn't capture the dissonance very well at all. Lazy filmmaking.
