Quite similar in mood and subject matter to the first film with Louis Hayward (The Saint in New York). It's not quite entering film noir territory, but there's a gritty feel and a bit of moral ambiguity about the Saint's methods and the type of shadowy life he leads. Sanders still plays it with a bit of humour, though, and it's fun watching as he runs rings around both sides of the law.

The Saint Takes Over (1940) is probable my favorite George Sanders The Saint up to this point. Bringing along both thugs and his police pal on a killer hunt filled with humor and twist 'n turns and. And there is even a little romance in there as Wendy Barrie is in place. Typical old school snoop stuff, meaning quick easy fun.
